What are Accountability Courts

In 2012, the Georgia Legislature created the Georgia Accountability Court Program, a criminal justice reform initiative established to provide effective alternatives to sentencing for nonviolent offenders and reduce the state & prison population. Accountability Courts offer a critical sentencing option for nonviolent property and drug offenders. In Chatham County, the Accountability courts include, Drug Court, Mental Health Court, Competency Court, and Veteran’s Court.

The goal of Georgia’s Accountability Court Model Court Program, supported by the Council of Accountability Court Judges (CACJ), is to recognize the great work of accountability courts across the state, as well as identify strong programs that may serve as mentors for other courts.
