A Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) is a qualified court representative appointed by the Court to represent the best interest of a minor child regarding child custody, visitation and child-related issues in a domestic matter. The GAL holds a position of trust with the minor child(ren) and will exercise due diligence while performing his/her duties. The Judge can order a GAL to be appointed in a case or the parties/attorneys can request a GAL to be appointed. Requesting a GAL is done by motion or in court. A Superior Court Judge signs an Order appointing a GAL in a specific case.
The Mediation Center of the Coastal Empire administers the program. They are responsible for the collection of court ordered fees from the parties and the disbursement of fees to the GAL. GAL training is held at the Family Law Resource Center every other year. The next training date will be in October 2020. If you are interested in becoming a GAL, please contact the Family Law Resource Center at 912-354-6057.
